Hof an der Saale issued this iron notgeld piece in 1920 as municipal coinage shortages persisted well beyond the armistice. The German federal government had suspended copper and nickel coinage production during the war, and by 1920 hundreds of German cities were still filling the gap themselves. Iron was the expedient choice — cheap, available, and already familiar from wartime Reichscoinage.
