Hildesheim's 1920 iron notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency coinage, struck after paper notgeld had already flooded the market but metal remained scarce enough to justify coin-format alternatives. Iron was the default fallback — copper and nickel had been systematically diverted to war production since 1915, and postwar restocking of those metals lagged badly behind municipal demand for small change.
The Funck reference places this among the catalogued issues, though die variations within the Hildesheim municipal series are poorly documented compared to larger issuing cities.
