Obverse description Within a double incuse circle border, the municipal coat of arms of Grünhain is depicted centrally, showing a stylized bird positioned before three trees in low relief. The legend DIE STADT GRÜNHAIN appears in Latin characters, arcing above and below the central device, identifying the issuing municipality. The overall design is simple and utilitarian, consistent with the emergency notgeld issues of the post-World War I period.

Reverse description The reverse features the numeral '5' rendered in large, bold relief at the center of the field, denoting the denomination of five Pfennig. The central numeral is enclosed within two concentric incuse line circles, forming a plain border around the denomination. The design is deliberately austere, with no additional legend, ornament, or exergual inscription, characteristic of wartime and post-war emergency coinage.
