| Beschrijving voorzijde | A raised linear border encloses a circular inner field framed by a beaded or incuse ring. Within the central field, a standing armored knight faces right, holding a lance or spear, while subduing a rampant griffin — the heraldic symbol of Greiffenberg — at his feet. The scene alludes to the town's coat of arms. The surrounding annular legend reads STADTGEMEINDE at the top and GREIFENBERG SCHL. at the bottom, separated by small floral rosette ornaments on each side. |

Greiffenberg's 1919 notgeld issue was a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that paralyzed small commerce across Germany — the Imperial mint system had collapsed, and municipal authorities were left to improvise. Iron was the practical choice: copper and brass had been systematically stripped for war materiel since 1915, leaving local administrations with little else to work with.
The Funck catalogue remains the authoritative reference for Silesian municipal iron issues of this period, and the .1 suffix on this variety indicates the primary known die state.
