Elsenthal is a small settlement in the Bavarian Forest near Grafenau, and the Papierfabrik there issued this zinc notgeld piece during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat in 1918 — when hoarding and metal requisitions had stripped everyday commerce of usable small change. Factory-issued scrip of this kind was typically redeemable only at the company's own store or canteen, making it a form of tied currency that kept wages circulating within the employer's own economy.
