Gerresheimer Glashüttenwerke, founded in 1864 outside Düsseldorf, was one of Germany's largest glass manufacturers — best known for pharmaceutical and industrial glassware. This zinc notgeld piece was issued during the acute small-change shortage of 1919, when postwar monetary disruption left employers routinely minting their own tokens to pay workers in denominations the Reichsbank simply couldn't supply fast enough. Factory-issued emergency coinage of this kind was redeemable only at company facilities, effectively tying workers' spending to the issuing firm.
