正面描述 The coat of arms of the city of Calw occupies the central field, depicting a crowned lion rampant set within a quatrefoil shield outline. The heraldic device is rendered in low relief with clear definition of the lion's crown, mane, and raised forepaw. A circular legend reading 'STADTGEMEINDE' arcs along the upper periphery and 'CALW' along the lower periphery, separated by small decorative rosette stops. The overall design is contained within a plain raised rim.

背面描述 The denomination '5' is prominently displayed at the centre of the field, enclosed within a solid-line hexagonal frame. A circular pearl border surrounds the hexagon, and the full circumferential legend encircles this composition. The legend reads 'KRIEG UND NOT UNS DIES GEBOT' (meaning 'War and need commanded this of us'), accompanied by the date '1918', all separated by small dot stops. The design reflects the wartime Notgeld tradition of bearing an explanatory motto justifying the emergency issue.

附加信息

Calw issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as the imperial supply chain collapsed and Reichsbank metal coinage all but vanished from everyday commerce. Municipal authorities across Württemberg filled the gap themselves — Calw among hundreds of small German towns suddenly acting as de facto mints. Zinc was the only practical option by that point; copper and nickel had been commandeered for the war effort years earlier.

The novelist Hermann Hesse was born in Calw in 1877 and spent formative years there, though by 1918 he had long since left for Switzerland.
