Bonn-Siegkreis issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial coinage system buckled under wartime metal requisitioning — copper and nickel had long been redirected to munitions, leaving municipalities across the Reich to fend for themselves with emergency iron and zinc issues. The Siegkreis district, administratively merged with Bonn for much of this period, produced several denominations independently catalogued under separate Funck references, reflecting the fragmented nature of local emergency coinage authority rather than any unified municipal policy.
