| 裏面の説明 | The large numeral 5 dominates the center of the field, flanked on either side by a single upright rye stalk whose ears curve gracefully inward toward the top of the numeral, forming an open wreath-like frame. The inscription PFENNIG arcs along the lower periphery in evenly spaced capital letters. The mint mark appears above the rye ears at the uppermost point of the coin. The composition and layout are clean and unadorned, consistent with the functional aesthetic of early Federal Republic coinage. |

The Bank deutscher Länder was a transitional institution — established by the Western Allied occupation authorities in March 1948 to manage currency for the three western zones, it was never intended to last. It issued coinage for only two years before the Bundesbank replaced it in 1957. The 1949 5 Pfennig exists in two mint variants, struck at both Hamburg and Stuttgart, with the Hamburg pieces (D mintmark) generally commanding a premium in top grades due to lower surviving populations in Mint State.
