Additional information

Ahrweiler's zinc Notgeld issues belong to the emergency coinage wave that swept German municipalities following the First World War, when the Reich's copper and nickel supplies were exhausted and the central minting apparatus could not keep pace with the demand for small change. Local authorities were left to commission their own tokens from whatever materials remained available — zinc being the most practical option by 1918–1919. N. Mies was the issuing merchant or authority responsible for authorizing this particular piece, a common arrangement in the Rhineland where commercial entities often backstopped municipal liquidity.
