Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf was a small industrial municipality on the western shore of Kiel Fjord, later absorbed into Kiel in 1924. This note belongs to the vast wave of German Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitute currency — that flooded circulation after coin hoarding stripped pfennig denominations from everyday transactions during and after the First World War. Municipal authorities across Germany issued their own notgeld precisely because the central government could not or would not supply adequate small change in time.
At 50 × 42 mm, this is among the smallest notgeld formats produced, driven purely by paper economy rather than any design consideration.
