Eisleben issued its own small-denomination emergency notes — Notgeld — in 1920 because the Weimar government simply could not produce enough low-value coinage to meet everyday demand after the war. Towns across Germany stepped in to fill the gap, and Eisleben, a small Prussian mining city in Saxony-Anhalt best known as Luther's birthplace and death city, was among hundreds that contracted local or regional printers for the purpose. Otto Henning A.G. in Greiz handled a substantial volume of municipal Notgeld commissions during this period.
The series is common. Collectors generally pursue Eisleben Notgeld for regional or thematic interest rather than rarity.
