Obverse description Blue-toned Notgeld voucher with a central vignette of the Eisleben municipal coat of arms — a heraldic shield set against a blue field with ornamental scrollwork — flanked left and right by large numeral '5' denominators within decorative cartouches rendered in dark letterpress. The lower half carries the denomination in Gothic blackletter script reading 'Fünf Pfennig', with the issuing authority 'Der Magistrat', place and date 'Eisleben, den 1. Okt. 1920', and a manuscript signature above the title 'Oberbürgermeister'. Validity and redemption conditions are printed in small text along all four margins, with the printer's imprint 'Otto Henning A.G., Greiz' at the foot.

Denomination panels reading '5 / Pfennig' in Gothic script are positioned at left and right within arched cream cartouches framed by ornamental corner scrollwork. The issuer's name 'Stadtgemeinde Eisleben' is inscribed in bold Gothic lettering across the lower margin panel.

Comments

Eisleben issued its own small-denomination emergency notes — Notgeld — in 1920 because the Weimar government simply could not produce enough low-value coinage to meet everyday demand after the war. Towns across Germany stepped in to fill the gap, and Eisleben, a small Prussian mining city in Saxony-Anhalt best known as Luther's birthplace and death city, was among hundreds that contracted local or regional printers for the purpose. Otto Henning A.G. in Greiz handled a substantial volume of municipal Notgeld commissions during this period.

The series is common. Collectors generally pursue Eisleben Notgeld for regional or thematic interest rather than rarity.
