Salzwedel's municipal administration issued this note as part of Germany's vast Kleingeldersatz programme — the systematic replacement of small coinage that had been hoarded or melted as metal values exceeded face values during the inflationary spiral of the early 1920s. Thousands of German towns did the same, but what distinguishes Salzwedel's issue is the printer: the Salzwedeler Wochenblatt, the local weekly newspaper, produced these notes on its own press. The economics were brutally practical — a newspaper press could handle short-run paper work faster and cheaper than contracting a specialist.
