Opmerkingen

Herford's 1920 Kleingeldscheine — emergency small-change notes — were a direct response to the chronic coin shortage that plagued Weimar Germany as copper and nickel supplies had been exhausted by the war and post-war metal requisitions. Municipalities across Westphalia issued their own fractional paper at this period, and Herford was among the more prolific, producing several denominations locally rather than waiting on the Reichsbank.

Five-Pfennig notgeld in paper survives poorly; the denomination was handled constantly and discarded without ceremony once the shortage eased in the mid-1920s.
