Darmstadt's postwar small-change crisis was acute enough that the city issued its own paper Pfennig denominations well into 1920, long after Germany's central monetary authorities had expected coin shortages to resolve. This note is part of that municipal stopgap — Notgeld in its most utilitarian incarnation, printed locally by H. Hohmann rather than contracted to one of the larger specialist firms handling comparable issues elsewhere in Hesse.

Hohmann was a Darmstadt trade printer, not a security press, which matters for collectors: impression quality and paper consistency vary across the series.
