Schleiz notgeld from the 1918–19 period belongs to the first wave of German municipal emergency currency — issued not out of monetary ambition but because small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded by a civilian population grinding through the final year of the war. Town councils across Thuringia were left to fill the gap themselves, printing whatever their local presses could manage.
Stadt Schleiz sits in the Vogtland, then still within the Principality of Reuss-Schleiz. The political changeover to Weimar-era governance happened mid-series, meaning notes from this issue may have been authorized under two entirely different administrations within months of each other.
