Merseburg's wartime Kleingeldersatz — emergency fractional currency issued by the municipal magistrate to replace hoarded or melted small coinage — was a product of the metal shortages that forced hundreds of German towns to print their own substitute change from 1916 onward. Gebrüder Parcus in Munich handled a large volume of these municipal commissions, operating essentially as a clearinghouse printer for Notgeld across southern and central Germany.
The Parcus firm's involvement generally ensures consistent print quality, which distinguishes Merseburg's issue from some of the cruder locally-produced examples in the same series.
