Vicente Guerrero, the insurgent general who became Mexico's second president, was executed by firing squad in 1831 after being betrayed by a Genoese sea captain named Francesco Picaluga, who accepted a bribe from Guerrero's political enemies to lure him aboard a ship and hand him over. The 500-peso note once carried his image for decades before monetary reforms and denomination shifts repositioned him onto circulating coinage.
