Obverse description The Cuban coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield quartered with a royal palm, a rising sun, and a key between two promontories, supported by an oak branch and laurel wreath. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery. The weight and fineness inscriptions 12 G. and AG 0.999 appear on either side of the arms, while the face value 5 PESOS is inscribed along the lower rim.

Reverse description A Cuban solenodon (Solenodon cubanus), known locally as the almiqui, is depicted in left-facing profile in the central field, rendered in naturalistic detail. A circular legend arcs along the upper periphery reading FAUNA CUBANA, identifying the series, while the animal's name ALMIQUI curves along the lower periphery. The date 1981 and mint mark appear in the lower field beneath the figure.
