Servando Teresa de Mier was a Dominican friar whose 1794 sermon denying the traditional account of the Virgin of Guadalupe's apparition landed him in Inquisition prison and set off decades of exile, escape, recapture, and eventually a seat in the first Mexican constituent congress.
