Guatemala's 1923 provisional issues were struck during a period of acute monetary instability following the collapse of the peso's convertibility under the Estrada Cabrera regime. The aluminium bronze alloy was an expedient choice — cheaper to source than the silver it nominally replaced, and visually distinct enough to prevent confusion with older coinage already being hoarded.
KM#234 was short-lived by design. The quetzal-based monetary reform of 1925 rendered the entire provisional peso series obsolete within two years of issue.
