| Obverse description | Right-facing bust effigy of Justo Rufino Barrios, president of Guatemala from 1873 to 1885, rendered in low relief. The legend 'J. RUFINO BARRIOS' appears to the left of the portrait, while the date '1923' is positioned to the right in the field. The design is unadorned and utilitarian in style, consistent with the provisional coinage series issued during Guatemala's monetary transition period. |

Guatemala's 1923 provisional issues were struck during a period of acute monetary instability following the collapse of the peso's convertibility under the Estrada Cabrera regime. The aluminium bronze alloy was an expedient choice — cheaper to source than the silver it nominally replaced, and visually distinct enough to prevent confusion with older coinage already being hoarded.
KM#234 was short-lived by design. The quetzal-based monetary reform of 1925 rendered the entire provisional peso series obsolete within two years of issue.
