Pedro Moreno was a regional insurgent commander in western New Spain who allied with Javier Mina's 1817 expeditionary force — a quixotic invasion of Spanish-held Mexico by a Spanish liberal exile. Moreno was killed that same year during a cavalry engagement at El Venadito, shot from his horse. The Spanish commander who defeated him, Pascual de Liñán, was so intent on eliminating his influence that Moreno's severed head was displayed publicly as a warning.
