The "Pesos Oro" denomination name was not decorative — it reflected the Dominican Republic's longstanding legal fiction that the peso carried a gold-equivalent value, a claim that became increasingly strained through the 1980s as the country's foreign debt crisis and IMF negotiations eroded the currency's real purchasing power.
