The Junta de Conversión was established specifically to manage the catastrophic monetary aftermath of the Thousand Days War (1899–1902), during which the Colombian government had printed paper pesos so aggressively that hyperinflation had effectively destroyed confidence in domestic currency. This 5 Pesos Oro note was part of the slow, painful process of tying Colombian paper back to a gold standard — the "Oro" denomination was a deliberate signal, not a description of the physical instrument.
ABNC's New York facility produced the plates. The series is known for occasional ink offset on reverse impressions due to the printing pressures used on this weight of paper stock.
