Additional information

The Dominican 5 Peso bimetallic was introduced as part of a broader recoinage effort after the 1990s monetary turbulence that followed currency reforms under Leonel Fernández's first administration. The stainless steel centre in brass ring construction was chosen partly for durability in a tropical circulation environment and partly to complicate counterfeiting of a denomination with real purchasing significance in daily transactions.

The "magnetic" designation distinguishes it from an otherwise identical non-magnetic variant — a production difference tied to the specific steel alloy used in the centre plug, not a minting error.
