Reverse description The reverse presents a relief depiction of a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican ball player (jugador de pelota), rendered in a reclining pose after an ancient sculptural prototype, occupying the sunken oval field at center. The figure wears a ceremonial mask and protective gear characteristic of the traditional Mesoamerican ballgame. The date 1997 appears to the left of the figure within the field, and the mint mark Mo is positioned to the upper right. The legend JUGADOR DE PELOTA arcs along the lower portion of the oval field, while the denomination $5 is inscribed at the very bottom of the coin, all enclosed by a decorative border of pre-Columbian geometric ornaments.
