| Opis awersu | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the center of the obverse, rendered in fine detail with the traditional shield, Phrygian cap, fasces, oak and laurel branches, and rising sun. A curved legend reading REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5 PESOS appears in the lower field. The weight specification 16G. and fineness AG 0.999 are inscribed on either side of the arms. The overall design closely follows that of KM#242, distinguished by the revised weight and face value. |

This trial strike was produced in 1989 as part of Cuba's commemorative program pairing José Martí with Fidel Castro — an ideologically loaded combination that collapsed the distance between the 19th-century independence martyr and the living revolutionary government. Trial pieces from this series were never released for circulation and exist almost exclusively in state hands or through limited official channels, making specimens in private collections genuinely difficult to account for. The JMA reference places it within Juan M. Arango's specialized Cuban numismatic cataloguing work, the only systematic attempt to document these elusive proof and pattern issues.
