The "Galeón de Acapulco" commemorates the Manila Galleon trade route, which operated for nearly 250 years between 1565 and 1815 — the longest continuous transoceanic trade route in history. Acapulco served as the Pacific terminus, where Chinese silk, porcelain, and spices were offloaded and carried overland to Veracruz before crossing the Atlantic. The ships themselves were among the largest and most heavily laden of their era, and their periodic capture — most famously by Anson in 1743 — made headlines across Europe.
This is part of Banco de México's long-running numismatic series dedicated to pre-Hispanic and colonial heritage, issued primarily for the collector market rather than circulation.
