The Banco del Estado de Paraguay was a short-lived institution, established in 1889 and dissolved by 1895 when the government replaced it with the Banco del Paraguay y Río de la Plata. This note falls squarely in that final phase of operation, issued just a year before the bank ceased to exist — which helps explain why complete surviving examples are uncommon.

Giesecke & Devrient had been printing for South American clients since the 1870s and brought consistent intaglio quality to what was otherwise a financially unstable issuer. Paraguay was still rebuilding from the catastrophic losses of the War of the Triple Alliance, which had wiped out the majority of the male population by 1870 and left the economy dependent on foreign loans and chronically weak paper currency for decades afterward.
