The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires occupied an unusual position in Argentine monetary history: it operated as a quasi-central bank for the province long before any national reserve institution existed, issuing its own notes against a separate provincial guarantee rather than federal backing. By 1881, Argentina was still navigating the fractured currency landscape left by decades of competing provincial emissions, and Buenos Aires province remained one of the few issuers with enough credibility to keep its paper trading near par.
ABNC printed this series from its Maiden Lane facility. The company held the Banco de la Província contract through several successive series, which sometimes makes distinguishing individual issues tricky without checking the serial prefix and signature combination carefully.
