Francisco Xavier Mina was a Spanish liberal who turned against his own country to fight for Mexican independence — a genuinely unusual biographical arc. Exiled from Spain for opposing Ferdinand VII's restoration, he landed on the Texas coast in 1817 with a small expeditionary force and mounted a guerrilla campaign in the Bajío region before being captured and executed at Pénjamo that same year, aged 28. This coin is part of Mexico's long-running bimetallic commemorative series honoring figures of the independence movement, issued across several years from 2008 onward.
