Issued in 2002, this gold piece commemorates Eva Perón decades after her death in 1952 — a significant political act given that her image had been banned from public display by the military government that ousted Juan Perón in 1955. That prohibition lasted until the early 1970s. The coin was struck during Argentina's catastrophic peso crisis, when the country defaulted on $100 billion in sovereign debt and froze private bank accounts under the corralito restrictions. Gold coin production during a currency collapse carries its own irony.
