The "Disco de la Muerte" nickname — Death Disc — was given by Mexican dealers and collectors after early batches from the 1997 issue developed aggressive, disfiguring toning that rendered many coins unsaleable as bullion. The cause was traced to contaminated packaging materials used at the Casa de Moneda, specifically sulfur compounds in the plastic sleeves. Affected pieces toned unevenly and rapidly, sometimes within weeks of leaving the mint.
The problem was addressed for subsequent production, but the nickname stuck to the entire two-year run.
