The "Convertibles de Curso Legal" designation on this note is inseparable from Argentina's Convertibility Law of 1991, which pegged the peso one-to-one with the US dollar and legally mandated that every peso in circulation be backed by dollar reserves. The phrasing was statutory, not promotional — it appeared on notes by legal requirement.
This second issue ran through the final years of the peg before the December 2001 corralito froze bank accounts and the convertibility regime collapsed in January 2002. Notes from the tail end of the 1998–2003 print run circulated through one of the worst sovereign debt defaults in history.
