Obverse description The current Mexican national arms occupy the center of the field, depicting an eagle displayed left, perched on a cactus growing from a rocky islet, grasping a serpent in its beak and talons, encircled by a wreath of oak and laurel branches. Surrounding the central arms are ten smaller roundels, each bearing a different historical version of the Mexican national coat of arms, arranged across the field to illustrate the evolution of the device through successive eras. The curved legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS runs along the upper portion of the field between the central and peripheral devices.
