| Obverse description | The aluminium-bronze centre features the Mexican national arms: an eagle displayed in left profile, perched atop a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky islet, grasping a serpent in its beak and talons. The device is rendered in bold relief against a plain field. The surrounding stainless steel ring bears the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS along the upper arc in raised Latin lettering. The lower portion of the ring is decorated with an ornamental laurel and olive branch motif in low relief. |

The denomination $5 appears to the left of the effigy and the mint mark Mo above the date 2008 to the right. The subject's name CARLOS MARÍA DE BUSTAMANTE is inscribed in an arc along the lower portion of the centre.
