5 Pesos Bolivianos

Bolivia's monetary system was overhauled in 1963 when the peso boliviano replaced the boliviano at a rate of 1,000 to 1, a direct consequence of the catastrophic inflation that followed the 1952 National Revolution and the subsequent nationalisation of the tin mines. This 5-peso piece belongs to the later years of that currency's lifespan, struck under Hugo Banzer's military government.

The peso boliviano itself would not survive the decade — hyperinflation returned with force in the early 1980s, and by 1987 the currency had been replaced again, this time by a new boliviano at 1,000,000 to 1.
