Cuba's piedfort issues of the 1990s were produced almost exclusively for the European collector market, routed through state export agencies during a period when hard currency was desperately scarce following the Soviet collapse and the tightening of the U.S. embargo. The apatosaurus subject belongs to a broader paleontological series likely developed at the suggestion of foreign distributors rather than any domestic scientific institution — Havana's Casa de la Moneda had little tradition of natural history themes before this decade.
Pieforts from this program were struck in very limited quantities. The KM#P54 designation places it firmly in proof piedfort territory, double-thickness, intended for sets rather than individual sale.
