Antonio Maceo Grajales, the Afro-Cuban general who refused to accept the Pact of Zanjón ending the Ten Years' War in 1878 — a public rejection known as the Protest of Baraguá — became Cuba's most politically durable revolutionary symbol precisely because his defiance predated and then outlasted Spanish colonialism itself. He was killed in action at Punta Brava in December 1896, less than two years before the war he helped reignite finally ended. Cuba's bimetallic peso series placing him on circulating coinage reflects a deliberate hierarchy of revolutionary figures across denominations.
