Humboldt's 1800–1801 stay in Cuba was brief but consequential — he documented the island's geography, climate, and economy with characteristic obsession, and his published findings directly informed early 19th-century debates about Cuban independence and the abolition of slavery. Cuba issued commemorative coinage honoring him across several decades, part of a broader hard-currency program designed to generate foreign exchange during periods of economic isolation.
