Argentina's provincial quasi-currencies — known as lecops, patacones, or simply by their provincial names — emerged from the 2001–2002 convertibility collapse, when the federal government froze bank accounts and the formal peso effectively ceased to function for daily transactions. Jujuy, one of the poorer northwestern provinces, issued its own series to meet payroll obligations and keep local commerce moving. These notes circulated alongside federal currency and were technically redeemable against future provincial tax obligations.
By 2007, most provinces had wound down their emergency issues. A Jujuy emission at that date is late in the cycle and warrants scrutiny as to whether it represents a fresh authorization or a reissue against existing stock.
