5 Pesos

By 1975, Chile's 5 Peso note was already an anachronism. Inflation under the military junta — which had seized power in September 1973 — was running at several hundred percent annually, and the 5 Peso denomination had effectively no purchasing power. The note continued circulating largely as a matter of institutional inertia while the government worked through a broader monetary restructuring that would eventually replace the Peso with the new Peso in 1975 at 1,000:1.

Printed by the Casa de Moneda de Chile in Santiago, this is one of the last issues before that redenomination rendered the entire Peso series obsolete overnight.
