The Negros Emergency Currency Board was one of several provincial bodies that issued guerrilla currency in the Philippines following the Japanese occupation. Negros Occidental remained a center of significant resistance activity, and locally issued scrip allowed the anti-Japanese civil administration to function — paying soldiers, teachers, and local officials outside the Japanese-controlled monetary system.
Japanese military authorities declared possession of guerrilla currency a capital offense, which did nothing to stop its use but guaranteed that most surviving notes passed through hands that understood the risk. Notes from the 1943 Negros issues are genuinely scarcer than their print runs suggest for exactly that reason.
