Colombia's gold 5 Pesos of this period were struck at the Medellín mint, which had been reestablished in the 1870s largely to process gold from Antioquia's prolific mining region — the same geological belt that made Colombia one of the world's leading gold producers at the time. The coins drew directly on domestic metal, a rarity for Latin American issues of the era that were frequently dependent on imported bullion or foreign minting contracts.
Production across the 1913–1919 window was interrupted by the political turbulence following the Reyes administration and chronic fiscal instability in Bogotá.
