Reyes González & Hermanos was a private merchant house operating out of Barranquilla, issuing its own circulating notes during a period when Colombia's fragmented banking system left regional commercial firms to fill the gap. Private merchant scrip of this kind was common along the Caribbean coast in the late nineteenth century, where distance from Bogotá and the chronic scarcity of official currency gave local credit instruments genuine purchasing power.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the Specialized volume — a reminder that this is not a state-chartered bank note but a private commercial obligation, legally distinct and considerably rarer in surviving examples than contemporary government issues.
