Banco Unión was one of several Colombian regional banks that proliferated under the 1880 banking law, which deliberately decentralized note-issuing authority to the state level. Cartagena-based institutions operated under constant liquidity pressure — the city's commercial volume was significant, but its banking capital was thin relative to Bogotá and Medellín competitors.
The American Bank Note Company contract is unremarkable for the period; ABNC held most Colombian regional bank printing work through the 1880s. What matters is how few Banco Unión notes survived the 1894 liquidation of the bank, which preceded the broader collapse of Colombia's free-banking experiment ahead of the 1905 nationalization under the Banco Central.
