The Banco de Marquez was a provincial Mexican private bank operating under the concession framework that preceded the 1897 Ley General de Instituciones de Crédito, which eventually consolidated banking authority and pushed most regional issuers out of circulation. ABNC produced notes for dozens of Latin American clients during this period, typically working from reusable plate stock with localized text overprints — a cost-effective arrangement that means the decorative elements on this note almost certainly appeared on issues for other banks in other countries.
Documentation on the Banco de Marquez is sparse, and surviving examples from this 1883 series are uncommon in any grade.
