Barrios, who consolidated control by 1873, aggressively restructured the country's financial institutions and currency system as part of a broader modernization program. The peso coinage issued under his regime was intended to anchor Guatemala's participation in international trade at a moment when Central American republics were competing to attract foreign investment.
